On Labour Day weekend this fish was caught in the Upper Niagara River in
the vicinity of Strawberry Island. The fish was caught on a bass tube jig. The tackle that was used is as follows:
Rod-6 foot Berkley Series 1 med/lite action rod.
Line-Berkely 10 lb. Fireline
Leader-8 lb Berkley Vanish.
Reel - Daiwa Emblem X 2500ia.
The fight lasted approx. 2 hours from hook up to release. Length of the sturgeon was approx 5.5 feet, weight is estimated at 90-100 lbs. Thanks
to Capt. Chris Cinelli of Niagara River Guides for his assistance in providing a larger net with which to land the
fish. Also thanks to Ray Brown of Pikeville, KY for the extra muscle to bag this guy and Todd
Mayhorn of Pikeville, KY for taking the photos that you see. Glad these guys could assist as I was fishing alone at the time with too small a
net and no camera. Won't be without a camera next time. Do they sell nets this big? Keep your line in the water, you never know who's coming
to see you.
Thanks Gerald
